Vehicle Registrations

Temp Tags (Inspection Tags) / Permanent Tags

What Do I Need To Bring? Drivers License You Must Have A MD State ID#, If You Do Not Have A MD State ID#, Maryland Tags Can Obtain One For You), A Valid Title, Bill Of Sale And Other Documentation As Provided By The Dealer. Any Vehicles Purchased From A Business, Dealer, Auction, Or Government Agency Must Include A Bill Of Sale. Vehicles Older Than seven years old And Purchased From A Private Party Does Not Require A Bill Of Sale. Must Be At Least 18 Or Have A Legal Guardian Or Parent As A Cosigner. Maryland Recognized Insurance And Policy/Binder Number And Maryland Safety Inspection. If Vehicle Has Not Been Inspected, Temporary 30 Day Tags Are Available. Complete Form VR129 For Temporary 30 Day Tags And Form VR-005 For Title Application. If Vehicle Is Being Jointly Registered, Both Parties Must Sign All Forms And Have Or Obtain A MD State ID#. Vehicles That Have Already Passed Inspection will Receive 2 Year Registration. Vehicles That Have A Certificate Of Origin Do Not Require Registration. Only Person(s) Listed On The Bill Of Sale May Title Vehicle.

Renewal

Failure To Provide And Sign All Necessary Documentation Could Delay Your Renewal Process. If You Are In Default To The MD Vehicle Administration For Any Reason, And Have Not Made Reasonable Accommodations With The MVA To Satisfy These Obligations, You May Not Be Able To Register Or Renew Registration For A Vehicle.

*Please Note That You Will Not Be Able To Renew If You Currently Are In Default To The MVA For The Following Reasons, But Not Limited To: Insurance Violation, Red Light Ticket, Administrative Fees, State Police Repair Orders Or Any Other Flags Administered By MVA For Non-Compliance.

Mechanical Lien Titles

To obtain a mechanics lien for a title you must be the owner of an authorized auto repair facility. The vehicle was repaired/stored in your care, custody or control for more than 30 days with a written repair order from the owner. You can receive the title in 4-6 weeks.

Duplicate Maryland Title

  1. Send a clear copy of all registered owners ID’s whose names are listed on the title along with phone numbers.
  2. Download POA Form ( Owner/Co Owner must sign). Download VR-018 Form and fill out the application. ( Owner and Co Owner must sign)
  3. Mail a check or money order in the amount of $40.00 to:

You will receive your title within 1 week once your application has been processed.

  1. A Tag & Title Service will only send your title to the address on the title. To have your title sent to another address, please send a stamped, self addressed envelope along with your application.

*Please Note, if you have changed your name or if you are requesting a duplicate title on behalf of a deceased individual’s estate, documented proof of name change or a Letter of Administration from a court naming the individual as the benefactor of the estate as well as a death certificate will be required. For overnight and second day service, you may include a prepaid FEDEX or UPS air bill to have your duplicate title returned to you.

Your Duplicate Title Will Be Available For Pickup In Our Iverson Mall Branch Or You Can Request For Your Title To Be Mailed. To Be Mailed You Would Need To Put The Correct Address Under Your Clear Copy ID. If You Plan To Pick Up Your Title From The Branch, Please Include A Valid Phone Number To Be Notified When Title Is Available For Pickup.

*Please Note That Only The Current Registered Owner Can Obtain A Duplicate Or Corrected Title. If Title Has Joint Ownership, Both Parties Must Provide State Issued Identification; Additionally, Both Parties Must Sign The POA And Form VR-018. If The Original Title Owner Is Unavailable, You Will Need To Go To A Full Service MVA To Apply For A Request For Information.

Title Only Transfer (No Tags)

What Do I Need To Bring? Drivers License (Or MD State ID #.) If You Do Not Have A MD State ID, Maryland Tags Can Obtain One For You), A Valid Title, Bill Of Sale, And Other Documentation As Provided By The Dealer, Form VR-005. Complete Form VR-005 In Its Entirety, Along With Signed Bill Of Sale And Re-Assignment Sheets. If Vehicle Is Being Jointy Titled, Both Parties Must Sign Form VR-005 As Well All Documentation Provided By The Dealer. Only Person(S) Listed On The Bill Of Sale May Title Vehicle. All Documentation Must Be Original. Maryland Tags Does Not Accept Copies. Titles Will Not Be Accepted If Altered Or Mutilated.

Gifts

Vehicles Can Be Given As Gift Only If The Vehicle Has A Current Maryland Title And Is Given By An Immediate Family Member. Complete Form VR-103, Along With MD Recognized Insurance, And A Valid Title. If The Last Names Are Different, Official Proof Of Relationship Must Be Presented (Ie, Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, Etc). Historic / Streetrod Vehicles Must Meet The Above Requirements, However, Do Not Need Maryland Safety Inspection. Complete Form VR-096 And VR-005 (If Given As A Gift, VR-103 Must Be Completed And Included). Historic Vehicles Are Defined To Be 20 Years And Older. Streetrods Must Be 25 Years Or Older And Have Been Substantially Altered From The Manufacturers Original Design.

Registering A Vehicle With A Lien (Financed Vehicles)

If Your Vehicle Title Is Being Held By A Lienholder, You Can Request Your Lienholder To Express Deliver Your Vehicle Title Directly To Maryland Tags For Processing. Download The Lienholder Title Request Form and Fax To Your Lien Holder. They Will Forward Your Title To Maryland Tags Via Certified Mail. Please Include A Valid ID Contact Number So That You May Be Notified When The Title Has Been Received. Maryland Recognized Insurance With The Policy/Binder Number Must Be Presented.

Registering An Out-Of-State Vehicle In Maryland

What Do I Need To Bring? State Issued Drivers ID With A Maryland State ID Number. (If You Do Not Have A MD State ID #, Maryland Tags Can Request One For You). An Original Title; Maryland Tags Cannot Accept Altered Or Mutilated Titles. Maryland Safety Inspection Is Eventually Necessary, But Not Required At The Initial Registration. If The Vehicle Has Not Been Maryland Safety Inspected, You Can Receive 30 Day Temporary Tags To Take Your Vehicle Through Inspection. Vehicles Manufactured In within the last seven years Or Newer Will Require An Original, Notarized Bill Of Sale; This Is Also Required For Any Year Vehicle That Was Purchased From Any Business, Dealer, Auction Or Government Entity. All Documents Associated With The Sale Of The Vehicle Must Presented Including Re-Assignment Sheets, Affidavits Or Any Other Documents As Provided By The Selling Party.

What Do I Need To Bring? Renewal Form VR-1B Or The Most Current Vehicle Registration And State Issued Picture ID. If Registration Is Unavailable, You May Furnish The Tag Number Or Vehicle Title Or Vin Number. To Apply For Renewal On Behalf Of A Third Party, A Notarized Power Of Attorney With A Copy Of The Vehicle Owners ID Must Be Presented. Only The Original Document Can Be Accepted.

Substitute Tags / Stickers

What Do I Need To Bring? If Replacing Tags Or Stickers Due To Loss Or Theft, Your State ID, Vehicle Registration And A Case Number Must Be Presented. A Case Number May Be Obtained From Your Local Police Department By Contacting Them Via The Non-Emergency Number. (Prince Georges County Non-Emergency # Is 301.333.4000). Print And Sign Form VR-009 And Bring Along With Your State ID And The Obtained Case Number. Anti-Theft Screws Are Available. If Vehicle Is Jointly Registered, Both Parties Must Sign Form VR-009, Or Notarized POA and a Copy Of The Other Owners ID Must Be Included.

Personalized Tags

What Do I Need To Bring? Bring Your State ID, MD Recognized Insurance And Current Vehicle Registration. For Personalized / Vanity Plates, Your Vehicle Must Already Be MD Safety Inspected. Allow 8-12 Weeks For Delivery. Download Form VR-164 And Fill Out In Its Entirety. Be Sure To Choose Several Selections Of Personalization In The Event Your First Or Even Second Choice Has Been Taken. After Receipt Of Your Personalized Tags Via Us Mail, You Must Turn In Your Current Tags.

Tag Transfer

What Do I Need To Bring? Download Form VR-008, Sign And Fill Out In Its Entirety. The Vehicle Title That The Tags Will Be Transferred To (Include Bill Of Sale, Re-Assignment, Etc For Vehicles seven years and Newer.) Current Vehicle Registration, MD Safety Inspection For The Vehicle The Tags Will Be Transferred To. Please Note That The Current Vehicle Registration Must Be Valid For At Least Another 13 Months From The Date Of Transfer In Order To Transfer Tags, Otherwise, Vehicle Registration Will Be Renewed For One Year. Vehicles Must Be Of The Same Class In Order To Transfer (Ie, Passenger Car To Passenger Is Okay; Pickup Truck To Passenger Car Cannot Transfer). Tags Cannot Be Transferred From One Person To Another.

Duplicate Registration

What Do I Need To Bring? A Valid, State Issued ID And Form VR-009. Vehicle Information Such As The Tag Number, Vin, Or Title Number Will Be Necessary In Order To Create A Duplicate Registration For The Correct Vehicle. If Vehicle Isjointly Registered, Both Parties Must Sign Form VR-009. Notarized Power Of Attorney Must Be Presented With A Copy Of The 2nd Parties ID If They Cannot Be Present At The Time Of applying For A Duplicate Registration.

Tow Truck Registration

What Do I Need To Bring? State Issued ID, Vehicle Title, Bill Of Sale And Other Documents As Provided By The Dealer, MD State Safety Inspection, A Business Card With The Name Of The Representative Of The Business And Your Z-Number (A ‘Z-Number’ Is A MD ID Assigned To A Business Entity). Maryland Recognized Insurance. If Vehicle Has Not Been Maryland Safety Inspected While In Your Ownership, 30 Day Temporary Inspection Tags Are Available. Complete Forms VR-294, VR129, And VR-005.

Tow Truck Registration Renewal

What Do I Need To Bring? State Issued ID, The Vehicles Current Registration Certificate, A Business Card Showing The Name Of The Individual Renewing The Registration To The Vehicle. If Obtaining Registration After Having The Vehicle MD Safety Inspected, The White Copy Of The MD Safety Inspection Certificate Must Be Presented. Complete Form VR-1B. If Obtaining Registration On Behalf Of A Company And The Individual Receiving The Registration Is Not An Official Representative Of The Company, A Notarized Power Of Attorney Signed By An Officer Of The Business Must Be Presented Along With A Signed Copy Of That Persons State Issued ID.

Tag Return

What Do I Need To Bring? Bring Both Sets Of Tags, Vehicle Registration For The Tags Being Returned. If There Are Least 13 Months Of Time Left In The Registration Period For The Tags Being Returned, You May Be Eligible For A Refund. If You Have More Than 13 Months Of Time In The Registration Period, To Receive A Refund From MD Motor Vehicle Administration.
